The last stop on the way to Haleakala Crater is Sunrise Protea Farm. No need to call ahead…just stop in and stroll through the free Protea botanical garden. With rare varieties of Protea growing alongside the garden path, you can grab a sandwich and a drink from the little country market here and settle in for a picnic. These plants were first brought here from South Africa, where they appeared 300 million years ago high on the mountain slopes. A cool to cold temperature is necessary for cultivation of these outrageously beautiful blossoms, and the climate of Upcountry Maui is absolutely perfect.
