Time to leave the resorts behind and explore the other side of Maui. Upcountry is worlds away from the bustle of the beaches. The pace is island-style and many things are still done in the old ways. While paniolos (cowboys) are busy rounding up cattle from horseback, fine art & cappuccino are being offered alongside the latest fashions just down the road. The diffused light of day and the golden sunlight of afternoon give the rich green pasturelands an other-wordly feel.
The first stop on this journey is Makawao. Don't bother with breakfast at the hotel when you can have your coffee on the lanai at Casanova as you watch the town rub the sleep from its eyes. What was once a rough and tumble cowboy town is now a lively community of entrepreneurs that mixes a general store and an old fashioned barber shop with health food, fine art,restaurants, and a collection of boutiques unrivaled throughout the islands. If you want to shop, stop into Holiday & Co where yoga meets black-tie affair. Or Pink by Nature for a stylishly casual look. Piiholo Ranch Store and Aloha Cowboy are the last word in western.
Makawao is also a mecca for fine art. Watch a glassblower at work at Hot Island Glass or visit Viewpoints Gallery for a look at a collection of local art you wont want to miss.
Next, head up to 10,023ft. for an incredible view into the crater of the majestic Haleakala. Still classified as active, this volcano is the second largest mountain in the world! You may want to enjoy a picnic amid fragrant lavender fields at Alii Kula Lavender!
If a picnics not your style, O'o Farm does a tour of their beautiful fields where youll harvest your own food and have it prepared by a world-class chef, just down the road.
After lunch, venture out to Ulupalakua Ranch, the home of Maui's Winery. Youll find a charming little tasting room amid some of the most stunning scenery Hawaii has to offer.
By now, the sun is setting and you're ready for dinner at Haliimaile General Store. Renown chef Bev Gannons tasty creations will delight everyone in your group. A cappuccino for the road and youre ready to head back to your resort or back to Makawao for dancing and live music at Casanova!
