Hawaiian Vacation for Two!
Explore the Raw Beauty of... Molokini
By Amy Huyett Published: 06/21/2007
One glance out at the horizon and you can’t help but notice the crescent-shaped sunken crater of Molokini islet. Just a few miles off the coast of South Maui, a snorkel or dive trip out to this natural aquarium will bring you face to face with 250 species of vibrant colored fish, 25 percent of those found only in Hawai‘i. Possible encounters with octopus, eels, manta rays and other sea life can make for an unforgettable experience in the water.
Its unique crescent shape acts as a fortress that provides protection from waves and currents, making the water clear and calm with up to 150 feet of visibility. First time snorkelers will feel perfectly safe in the crater’s shallow water while experienced divers can take in the thrill of the backside’s 300-foot wall dive.
There are plenty of snorkel and dive tour boats leaving from Ma‘alaea Harbor. Most leave first thing in the morning and include an island style breakfast, all gear, instruction and a BBQ lunch. You’ll still be back relaxing poolside by early afternoon. Molokini is a must on your Maui to do list.
