Hawaiian Vacation for Two!
Explore the Raw Beauty of... Makena
By Amy Huyett Published: 06/21/2007
Maui has more than its fair share of beautiful beaches and Wailea is no exception. The resort beaches of Wailea are world-class and great for swimming and snorkeling. It makes it tempting to spend your whole vacation playing in the usually calm waters right in front of your resort. But just a ten-minute drive south of Wailea lies a beach so perfect, it truly stands alone. With its seemingly endless expanse of soft, white sand and crystal clear water, Big Beach is No Ka Oi, the best beach on Maui.
Officially called Oneloa Beach, “long sand”, it’s one of the last undeveloped beaches on the island, stretching almost two-thirds of a mile long and over 100 yards wide, giving you plenty of room to bake in the Hawai‘ian sun. The scenery is stunning with Pu‘u ‘Olai, the last volcanically active cinder cone on Maui rising 360 feet to the north, Haleakala’s peak towering above in the background and unsurpassed views of neighboring islands Lana‘i and Kaho‘olawe on the horizon. A favorite with the locals for its natural beauty and water sports, the waves at Big Beach tend to be big and rough. The shallow shore break makes conditions dangerous and unless very experienced, you should stay on the sand and enjoy the view. But when the waves are “going off”, watching the body boarders and surfers is a spectacular sight and definitely worth the short drive from Wailea.
