Hawaiian Vacation for Two!

Explore the Raw Beauty of... La Perouse/King's Trail

Journey south past Makena along the Ahihi Kina‘u Natural Area Preserve, where the road carves through stark, desolate lava fields sprawled to the edges of the sparkling blue Pacific Ocean. This eerie, alien-like atmosphere feels a lifetime away from the manicured resorts of Wailea and allows a rare glimpse into ancient Hawai‘ian civilization.

The end of the road is La Perouse Bay, named for the French explorer who, in 1786, was the first white man to land on Maui, and signed “La Perouse” on his map of the world.

The pristine water is excellent for snorkeling and early morning turtles and spinner dolphin sightings. But always monitor water conditions; the afternoon tradewinds and strong currents can pick up suddenly.

This is also the beginning of the Hoapili Trail, the old King’s “highway” which runs through fields of black a‘a lava laid down by volcanic activity from Haleakala over the last 400 years.

Early Hawai‘ians had few roads for travel and hand cut this rock trail, on orders of the Pi‘ilani kings of Maui, which would eventually circle the entire island. In ancient times the area was known for sightings of the Huaka‘i po, or “Night Marchers”, restless spirits who are trapped on earth and roam at night causing mischief.

If you venture out on this trail be prepared. The hike is 5.5 miles and there are no facilities. Bring lots of water, sunscreen and good footwear.
